What is it? (HSDD)

HSDD is a broad spectrum that occurs for many women as they enter the menopause transition. It can include:

  • Decreased sexual desire
  • Decreased sexual arousal
  • Difficulty having an orgasm, less intense
  • Decreased response or pleasure with sexual activities

Approximately one-third and one-half of all perimenopausal and postmenopausal women experience one or more of these symptoms listed above.

What causes HSDD?

HSDD can be caused by certain menopausal changes such as poor sleep, vaginal dryness, pain with penetration, and insecurity with changes in body shape related to changes in hormonal changes, chronic health, or certain medications. Other contributing factors are the woman’s cultural and religious beliefs, relationship issues, her self-image, stressors, and lifestyle habits.

What medications and conditions can contribute to HSDD?

  • Antidepressants, specifically SSRIs
  • Low testosterone levels
  • Certain chronic health conditions, cancer treatments, and physical disability
  • Blood pressure medications

How is HSDD treated?

  • Examine any relationship issues
  • Sex therapy, relationship therapy
  • Certain testosterone-containing medications (not currently FDA-approved)
  • Yoga
  • Bupropion
  • Regular sexual activity/stimulation helps with vaginal dryness
  • Vaginal lubricants and moisturizers
  • Higher hormone therapy: pills, patches, creams
  • Vaginal estrogen
  • DHEA intravaginally (more research needs to be done)
  • Pelvic floor physical therapy
  • Kegel exercises
